Site assessment trainees followed a gravel track to a proposed small turbine pad. The farmer wanted generation for cold stores; the landscape offered wind and also a line of barns that broke the flow.
Students logged mast height options, photographed obstacles, and discussed bird flight lines with the landowner. Turbulence from the barns pushed the conversation toward a taller mast and a quieter pad location further from the yard.
The written report due that Friday asked for a recommendation with caveats: estimated capacity factor ranges, access for a crane, and a note on seasonal farm traffic. We mark reports on clarity for a non-specialist reader as much as on technical completeness.
Small wind is not every client’s answer, and saying so plainly is part of the assessment craft we teach.
