Teaching renewables where the weather is honest
Birchfield grew from installation crews who wanted apprentices and career changers to practise on real arrays and plant rooms before they stood on client roofs alone.
Registered name and history
The official registered business name is Birchfield Renewable Energy Engineering School Ltd. The school was established in 2011 in Stockton-on-Tees, first as evening classes for electricians adding solar work, then as a full diploma pathway when local employers asked for longer, assessed preparation.
Through the 2010s we added heat-pump hydraulics, storage modules, and accompanied site assessment days. The campus on Yarm Road still sits close to the housing stock our students survey — terraces, semis, and small commercial roofs that refuse tidy textbook assumptions.
Mission
We exist to prepare people for renewable energy engineering work that is careful, measurable, and respectful of buildings and landowners. Certificates matter; so do the habits of drawing shade correctly and saying when a turbine pad is a poor idea.
How we work with learners
Cohorts stay small enough that every student spends time on the outdoor array and in the plant room. Tutors mark reports for technical accuracy and for language a homeowner can follow. Field days are scheduled around weather windows, not marketing calendars.
